Verlag J.B. Metzler

Founded in 1682 in Stuttgart, J.B. Metzler is one of Germany’s leading specialists in liberal arts publications.

Appearances can be deceptive. Metzler isn’t just a publisher of Biedermeier works: in 1781 Friedrich Schiller published his seditious work Die Raeuber incognito.
As early as the 19th century J.B. Metzler press was greatly involved in creating a corpus of classical studies material with sound academic foundations. With its Realencyclopaedie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft comprising 84 volumes and the Neuer Pauly, classical antiquity remains one of J.B. Metzler’s prime areas of activity. Since the end of the Second World War it has added to and expanded its publications in history, anthropology, literary criticism, media studies, music, philosophy and languages. The 28-volume Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart published together with Baerenreiter press is a standard academic work. It also publishes a wide range of textbooks and manuals as well as academic paperbacks and dictionaries.
